A girlfriends dilemma - boyfriends 30th birthday!

Options
It's my boyfriends 30th birthday in a few weeks and I'm stumped what to get him!

He's the sort of person that buys things on a whim and then never really uses them. He is buying himself an iPad mini this weekend (he already has 3 laptops, largely disused).

He never knows what he wants, and in the past has seemed disinterested in gift-experienes that I've bought him for other birthdays (although he always says he'd rather have something to do than something to have)!

He likes golf and bought himself a full set of golf clubs about 6 months ago, he also bought himself a new golf bag 3 weeks ago. He's only been golfing once since he bought the clubs.

He says he likes cycling, the first year we were together I took him tandem bike riding in the South Downs which he seemed to enjoy. Last year he bought himself a bespoke made to measure bike. I use it more than he does - as an extension to our clothes horse!

He likes cooking, I've taken him on knife skills cookery course in London which he didn't seem too interested in (he'd just spent £300 on fancy Japanese kitchen knives).

I've taking him zorbing, on the London Eye, London Ducktours, golf & spa mini-break...the list goes on!

To add to the dilemma, we now live in Shanghai China! We've exhausted tourist ideas here (including fancy dinners in very high restuarants) and trips to most of the places we want to go! He's just booked us a trip to Chengdu for 5 days which is what I had been planning to surprise him with - a trip to see Panda's for his 30th. So now he has booked it for us anyway I can no longer do that for a surprise.

Maybe I need to switch tactics and find something he can keep? I just don't know.

If anyone has any suggestions whatsoever, they would be gratefully received!

Hmmm, I was thinking maybe something a little more exciting than an itunes voucher, maybe something I could make? I'm not sure what homemade gift a man might like to keep for his 30th though!? Or maybe a box of 30 little gifts?

Sounds like you have an active life. What about some kind of meditation retreat thing, something where he can empty his mind, doesn't need to talk etc. (Not necessarily a shared experience).
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

That'll do for me...the box of 30 little gifts...some hand made if you want and all wrapped individually of course. They don't even need to have any real value 20p each would do me a chocolate bar could be one. I just reckon that's quite cool.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

I don't think I'd have the patience to hand-make 30 things! Although maybe I can rope some of my students in to help with the labour (teacher).... :)

  • Musharoom - I totally empathise! He likes cooking and you're in Shanghai - perhaps an authentic cookery course or similar, that you could enjoy together?
