Using my car for business purposes

in Cutting tax
I have a meeting with my employer on monday to discuss the expenses i am inccurring by using my car for business use.
At the moment i have a petrol card, and i have to fill in a form to claim what mileage is business and what is private and i then get money deducted from my wages to cover mileage i have done which was private use.
during the last tax year of which i only worked at the company for the last 3 months, i covered 3254 miles for business use, and in total i used £518.43 in pertol for those miles. by my calculations that means 16p per mile has in affect been paid. however i understand i am entitled to 40p per mile. so how do i go about claiming this money.
Do my employers have to give me this money, if not what am i entitled to ask my employer to cover by law, or can i claim this back against tax.

By law you're employer does not have cover any cost of business mileage. It is a matter of whether they can recruit/retain staff by not doing so.
You can claim the difference between the 16p and 40p back against tax from HRMC (ie you only get 22/40% of that back).0
