Due to long-term health problems i'm having to leave my job as a nurse. i've had an nhs pension for nearly 10 years and i have the option of applying for ill health retirment. I'm just wondering if I sucessfully applied for this how I would stand if I returned to work - outside the NHS - in the future.

yully I had to take ill-health retirement recently from the NHS.. I just looked in the booklet Early Retirement NHS... and it says that to qualify for an IHR.. you must be unable to carry out your duties due to permanent ill-health. and you are no longer able to do any regular work...
But I was never told that I couldn't get another job... although I would only probabely work part-time....
Best thing is to ring or e-mail them at www.nhspa.gov.uk phone...01253774774 I am sure they would answer your query .....#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Just spoke to a lovely young man, the only time it might be a problem would be if I went back into the NHS and then it depends on the work I do, so I'm going to send for my application form. Thanks for the help!0

Hi yully, all the paperwork was sorted out by my HR people I just went in for update meetings a couple of times and an interview for them to make sure that it was really what I wanted... I had to have a couple of meetings with Occupational Health Dept for the Doc to go through my medical history and also my own doctor for him to send a report (thats a whole story in itself) anyway I'll give you a time line of events might easier..
Nov 2005 went off long term sick...
Jan 2006 meeting with O/H DOC..
Feb informed that I would be on half pay from March
May informed my SSP ends and I have to claim Incapcity Benefit.
At this time I had to get a report from my GP and see O/H again..
October 2006 Meet with HR to formally apply for Ill-Health Retirement if this is accepted and you also agree they then give you a date of retirement... mine was set for December 2006
It seemed to go on forever but the first 6mths they were striving to find me alternative employment... so from the actual time of applying in October it was only 3mths to retirement date.... but as I said I was under the impression that HR did all the paperwork and you just see the doc etc....
Hope that helps....#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j
