Tax Calculation

Hi.

Sorry if this has been placed in the wrong section.

I'm looking for some advice.

I had a tax calculation back last week stating I have underpaid. I was working 2 jobs in the year 2010/2011 and 2011/2012.

I called the tax office and spoke to somebody there and they looked into it for me, they said the reason why was because I was using the same tax code for both jobs.

Now, I don't know what tax code I should have been using at the time and I didn't know that both jobs was using the same tax code, so is this my fault or theirs?

I'm really confused and would like some advice, thanks.

  • You'll probably get more responses if you post this on the Cutting Tax board.

Without a lot more detail it's hard to say where the fault lies but all that's happened is you are now being asked to pay what you should have paid in the previous tax years - you are not paying anything you shouldn't just paying it at a different time. If you're lucky you may be able to have it included in your tax code so you don't have to pay it all in one go.

I didn't know that both jobs was using the same tax code, so is this my fault or theirs?

As you didn't even bother to check your payslips I doubt there will be much sympathy though
