Engagement ring repair?

Hi all

I need to have my engagement ring reparied, and have no idea what I'm doing and was hoping that someone might be able to offer advice.

I've been engaged for almost a year, and my OH proposed with the ring so it's just under a year old. It has a twist, and 4 "claws" which hold the diamond in place and looks a bit like this (not exactly this one): http://www.diamonddealerdirect.co.uk/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=36&cat=Francesca

Trouble is - the diamond has come a little loose. It hasn't come "out", but I can push it and it moves. It looks to me as though all claws are intact, but that they've "spread" somehow so there's too much room for the diamond which moves and looks like it's fractionally away from falling out completely. I stopped wearing the ring (which makes me irrationally sad!) and called the jeweler OH bought the ring from as they do free repairs/re-sizing etc., but they've just called in the administrators so obviously won't take it.

If it wasn't such an expensive/sentimental item I'd have a go at it myself with a pair of pliers! But obviously that's not a great idea. So I need to take it somewhere to be repaired, and just don't know where to begin or how much this should cost. I really feel that I have no idea what I'm doing! Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks for any advice,

Yellowstar x

  • Ihad a ring where the claws had pulled out a bit i took it to a jeweller nearby who i trust (could tell you where but i dont know your area) and it only cost a few pounds. I dont imagine it would cost a lot to fix but i would try taking it to ajeweller over a shop.

It would help if you say where you are and maybe someone can recommend a place

Have you insured it? You could try there, they may be able to at least recommend someone.

If its under a year old, I would go back to who sold you it. I had any repairs and also ring sizing in first two years and I think that's usual.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • Thanks both

The original jewelers have just gone into administration - so they won't repair/re-size it for me.
I guess I should ask some local jewelers and see what they say. I'm in the Manchester area, but have only moved here very recently. Can anyone recommend a good jeweler in this area?

    Thanks again,

  • Hi, sorry to post on here I am new on here and don't know we're to post.
My problem is I had my ring resized by a jeweller two sizes up after 2 days a diamond came out. I took it back and they said they would fix it, anyway they called to say it was back and I am not one for complaining but when I got it I noticed the diamond they replaced was set lower thank the other diamonds,( it's a square princess cut ring) I said this straight away to the jeweller and he just fobbed me off saying that they had put a ledge on to keep it in.i walked away with the ring and kept looking at it so after 15 mins I went back and told him, it just wasn't right he looked at it with his eye glass and agreed it was set lower and that they would sent it back to whoever fixes them. This was about 2 weeks before Xmas he said it would defiantly be back for Xmas I rang and called in a few times it was never back. They called me Friday just gone to say ring was back, mother in law picked it up for me Saturday and the manager was going on to her about how much it cost to fix and I should get a one solid diamond instead of loads of small ones, this was my choice I don't see why I should have to have one solid one, anyway it's Monday two days later and guess what the same diamond has fell out again, I am so annoyed and feel like I don't want this ring anymore, it's been in the jewellers more than on my finger!
I am going to take it back tomorrow, does anyone have any suggestions of what I can say and what my rights are? Please note the ring was not bought from this shop, I paid 70.00 for my bridal set to be resized here and it's been a nightmare! It says on my receipt there is a12 month warranty on repairs, I am so gutted and annoyed that this manager in the shop doesn't seem apologetic and just try's to fob you off! Sorry for the big post x
