Advice needed re money owed to Powergen

Hi,
We recently decided to change from Powergen for our gas and electric to EDF Energy as when we did a comparison on uswitch it came out a lot cheaper.
This transfer has now been completed, and Powergen have got in touch with a final bill for £210 as apparently our account was in debt. We paid by a monthly amount chosen by them therefore I am angry that they have allowed our account to get thus badly in debt without reviewing and increasing our monthly payments. They are now saying that we need to pay this amount to them over a maximum of 3 months or have legal action against us.
I understand that we need to pay this however I feel that as it was their fault that the account got this badly in debt they should at least be flexible with us and maybe give us a chance to pay it off by direct debit over a year or something similar as there is no way we can afford what they want over 3 months. Does anyone have any advice, or know where we stand legally about whether we can take longer than 3 months to pay this back??
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm not sure about legally where you or they stand.
Is it worth writing to them and requesting that the repayment is spread over more than the 3 months an suggest tyou can realistically can afford.
I had a kinda similar issue with EDF over a gas bill when they denied being my supplier for over 3 years and then suddenly hit me with a bill for £700. I wrote and included all over my correspondence to them and from them and a third was knocked off.
The remaining amount was spread over 3 years as this was how long they denied supplying me for.
Good luck

Not wishing to take Powergen's part but it must have been obvious from bills that you had from Powergen that the monthly amount wasn't sufficient.....personally I think both you and Powergen must share the blame for not increasing the amount.
I would write to them but I think by trying to push all the blame onto them will just get their backs up2014 Target;

Might be worth checking your bill , as i have just changed from powergen to n power for cheaper power. They stopped taking the last 2 debits as soon as they received notification of us changing. So the final bill was alot larger than I was expecting. as it was missing 2 payments. Hope this makes sense.0

Why not send copies of your Bills to Energy Watchdog. Mr Keith Windsor, Energywatch, 9th Floor, Civic House, 156, Great Charles Street, Birmingham B3 3HN. This is what i got back from Ofgem. Complain!

I had a similar problem with Scottish Power. Powergen can't cut you off as you are not with them. If it was me, I would write to them and offer them the payment over 10 month, set up a standing order and pay it like that. As long as you are making payments they should not go legal.
Make sure you do pay it though.
And the previous OP is right. It is really your responsibility to check your meter and ensure that they are estimating the correct usage.Quality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford
