Thank you jamesd; you make it all sound so simple, however I am the artistic type who is woefully unsavvy (is that a word?) re all matters financial. You have all been incredibly helpful and I really appreciate you all taking the time to reply........my brain is starting to hurt0

I understand there are lots of small, unclaimed pensions circulating the system.
It is difficult to keep track if you have worked for 30/40 years for half a dozen difference companies.
I used the Pension Tracing Service and have found 2 pensions, totalling lumps sums of about £8000 and total annuities of about £1500 per annum. Not a fortune, but enough to replace the car and fund a decent holiday each year!

Wow Murphybear that's awesome, am really pleased for you. I contacted the pension tracing service in the first instance and they advised me to contact HRMC. They located the pension I took out in the 80s which was linked to my NI no, but were unable to help me with the others. PTS could not help with the rest as I did not have any policy numbers. I have a vague idea of the companies and the dates into which I paid in, and DWP gave me the phone numbers, but tbh I couldn't get through. I am going to write to them and keep my fingers crossed. I will, of course, let you know how I get on, it may help some other hapless soul in the future who is as disorganised as I am0

I have tried to ring them this morning, apparently their computer systems are being updated and no info available for queries until Tuesday 9th April.MollyJoe0
