Father in law has 3 pensions,would he then need 3 different tax codes?

    Potentially, but that would be for HMRC and the provider(s) to sort out. There should be no need for your father in law to do anything.

    Or your FIL may be able to consolidate the pensions prior to taking the income to have fewer or even one tax code/office.

    no need for your father in law to do anything.

    Whether continuing with three or combining into one (and will there be State pension as well?) I would certainly check out my tax position.

    There's very little an individual can do.

    You can check with your local tax office and make sure it's uptodate, but your pension provider will not accept your instruction when paying income.

    There is actually a lot an individual can and indeed should do about checking their tax, in particular where there may be multiple sources of income which often leads to tax underpayments or overpayments.
