OT Tax code - paying too much?

Options
Hi

I am on OT tax code which I think must be wrong as I pay 20% tax but do not earn very much.

I was on incapacity benefit from April - mid November.

Since then I have worked 36 hours per week on a wage of £6.24 p/h
( I have had 2 weeks and 1 day off sick during this time too so have had wage reductions and 1 week of SSP )

I have also worked 81 hours in a 2nd job as I am on the staff bank for another company, but as a full time student I just do not have time to do much overtime so my earnings in over time have been low.

I have also done 36 hours over time in my normal job.

Incapacity benefit for a full year does not exceed your tax allowance, it is less than £6,000 I think, so the fact I only claimed for 8 months means that can not have maxed out my allowance.

Add my earnings to my incapacity and for the tax year I would only be a couple of thousand over the personal allowance I think.

Will my overpayment be worked out and the money sent back to me, or do I have to persue this in some way ? ALso as we are close to the end of the tax year is it worth chasing up now or would it be better to wait until I get my March wage slip so its all final ?

Thank you

Your first job should be to get off the 0T tax code and onto a proper tax code. Did you not complete a P46 when you started working? The absence of a P45 or P46 is usually why the 0T tax code is used.

I suggest you phone up HMRC and get a proper tax code issued at least from the start of the new tax year if nothing else.

When you have all the relevant info in the form of P60s, you can start pursuing a refund if applicable.
