How to compare different endowments

Every year the press carries articles of endowment payouts from different companies and there are plenty of examples on this site.
The trouble is that there does not seem to be a standard format for these reports and it is hard to compare them all.
I am thinking that there ought to be a way to take into consideration the factors which vary -- like the number and the ages of the policyholders, the amount of life cover provided, the amount of the monthly premiums and also whether premiums are level or start out lower.
Can somebody suggest a formula that can be used to make corrections for these variable factors?
Also, does anybody know if there is already a site where large amounts of this kind of information is available? It could be very useful for those of us who are still not sure whether to surrender our policies or continue paying money into them.
