how do you keep potatoes fresh?

I have real trouble shopping as i can only buy a bag of potatoes cos if i buy more they go off within two days, i can only go shopping once a week as i have got 2 young kids and i dont drive.
So how can i keep the potatoes from going off so quick so i can buy for more meals through the week
