This is out of curiosity from a thread on another forum.
If somebody works part time and therefore has a set number of days holiday if they do extra hours should they be compensated either by a higher rate of pay or by getting time off?

I think it depends on the contract t&c's. I have had a part time jobs.
When I worked part time in ASDA my rate of pay was mw and my holiday rate was nearly double.
But when I worked at Jdw's my rate of pay and holiday rate were the same.
I worked loads of extra hours for both.Bad luck breeds bad luck.

You will not be entitled to higher pay, because you would then earn more than someone doing the same job full-time.0 -
I get the same hourly rate doing overtime as I do doing my regular hours. It is my choice to accept that's the way it is if I want to earn some extra money. Years ago I worked at places where overtime was at the rate of time and a half but I think that's out of the window everywhere now.0

Thanks it is more the time off/ holiday pay the other thread was about I'm thinking it sounds very unfair if the company employed somebody else to cover the extra hours they would have to let them have holidays so why does the person who is working there already not get extra? Yes thats how it is where I am now, im part time so whether full time staff get oT paid @ time and a half.0 -
Depends entirely what the contract says: ours makes it clear that in the unlikely event we agree to pay you for overtime, it won't be part of your contractual hours so you won't get holiday pay or extra pension payments made on it.
However when we had bank staff working 'as and when', they used to 'earn' entitlement to holiday pay for every single hour they worked.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I remember a few years back that when people employed by 2 of the supermarkets on 12 hr contracts worked o/t, they would get T+1/2. As a result, all the p/t staff booked as many hours as they could & earned huge amounts of cash.
Now, the same supermarkets pay NMW & only pay o/t rates once 40 hours work has been reached.Never Knowingly Understood.
