Where can I buy freshly caught fish in Belfast?

Options
I have been reading this article regarding farmed fish. I do not want to purchase farmed fish because of the increased risk of cancer and the impact on the environment.

I went to St Georges market today in search for freshly caught Sea Bass. To my shock all they had to offer was farmed Sea Bass. Their excuse was that they are not allowed to catch Sea Bass now, and it will be available soon.

Does anyone know where I can buy non farmed, cod, halibut, salmon etc.

I have tried Tesco's for salmon, but again it is farmed.

Did you try Walter Ewings on the Shankill road?
He is highly regarded, has been in the business for years and supplies lots of the top restaurants/cafes/hotels in Northern Ireland.
If he doesn't stock it he might know someone who does. HTH;)

You never eat out then? Seriously - I think you're being over concerned.
  • I fish both in the sea and in rivers so generally eat what i catch during the summer.
At other times i buy whole fish from St Georges market with the heads on and fillet/ tidy up at home. Try pin haddock or hake or witches-- they are in season-- caught locally and around £3 per kilo whole.
Sea bass are only commercially caught off the Cornwall coast and are caught in the summer months mainly. They will have a coloured cable tie type tag and demand a premium price.

I will eat farmed salmon if from Northern Ireland as there is only one farm here and they produce good quality "organic " fish.

Generally never buy fish that has not got a head on it and skin on it and previously frozen.

The article refers to farmed fish in the US. The aquaculture farms in NI are covered by completely different legislation and food regulations. The organic salmon produced in NI, and other fish caught or farmed in NI is highly regarded around the world which is why so much of it is exported.

If we worried so much about everything we ate we'd all be very skinny!
