Selling vintage clothing

Options
Hi guys.
I just wanted to ask for any advice on a project I'm in the process of setting up. I've been buying vintage clothes for quite a few years and I'd really like to have a go at making some money from it.
I'm planning on selling through a Facebook page to keep my overheads down but obviously the online market for vintage is very competitive and it would take a while to build up a 'fan' base.
With this in mind I'd like to be able to sell offline as well. I'm considering becoming a casual trader at one of the Camden markets (I don't live in London but I have friends up there so I could go up on a Thursday eve and have 3 days trading or something), but again I'm not sure how much I'd be able to make as there's so much competition.
I'd like to sell stock somewhere close to me - there's nowhere that sells vintage around here, and the particular town I have in mind is quite wealthy with a lot of independent shops. I did approach one which I thought would be a perfect fit to see if they would stock some of my clothes on a commission basis, but they said they just didn't have the space..I think that will probably be the case for everywhere, so I've become a bit disheartened on that front.

Sorry for rambling on....but I'd be really grateful if anyone has any ideas or advice!

  • Could you get a stall at a local market / carboot / vintage fairs?
I would assume you are already selling on ebay?
If you have no vintage fairs in your area, why not start one?
A pop up vintage fair, say every other month at a local church hall or something like that. we have massive pop up vintage events here every couple of months, people travel from all over the country to attend as well as trade.

Join all the vintage pages on facebook so you can get an idea of how your fellow traders work, find local events and network.
    Good luck!

I haven't got any advice for you, but I wanted to wish you well. It is nice to see someone with a fairly unique idea, everyone I know is selling hand made jewellery and it is so good to see someone do something different.

  • Thanks for the support :) I'm still in the process of sourcing stock but I'm feeling positive about my new little venture!

I hadn't thought about the vintage fair idea - that's a really good idea. Will definitely be looking into that, thnks!

I have been doing the vintage fashion fairs for quite a few years... they are popping up everywhere now, plus to be competitive with all the competition out there, you really have to know your stuff, and be realistic with your prices..

We have now gone back to wholesaling vintage again...

I know this might sound stupid, but depending on what type of vintage market you want to sell to, will dpend on where you should be selling..

    retro.... 60's - 70's

    students.... above and 80's/90's

    vintage.. 1940's - 50's

    1940's utility clothing

    antique... pre - 1920's

so basically depending on what above range you got, you will then chose the best place to sell
