I dont remember what my mum cooked for us as she died just before i turnt 9. We then lived with nan and she was a great cook.
Roast dinner with all the trimmings, including spring greens as one of the veg on a sunday. Dessert was always a rice pudding on sunday and yoghurts, biscuits, angel delight on other nights. Boiled mince with onions and grated carrot (plus grated knuckles!) with mash potatoes. Liver and onions with the bacon fried in the same pan as the liver and onions and then gravy made also in the same pan..yum!
Always lots of fruit and veg available. My uncles always made us cheese on toast for tea and that is still a great favourite. Never with mild cheddar though. Always a mature cheddar.
Nan was always baking cakes too - rock cakes, butterfly cakes, bread pudding etc.
Gypsy tart was served with lemon sauce at my school.
My children love noodle sandwiches for their lunch now that they are teens, as well as cheese toasties, fried egg sandwiches etc. But that is their choice and not for everyday....just whenever they think they can get away with it!0 -

And roast beef on Sunday, with Two Way Family Favourites and then The Billy Cotton Band Show on the radio.

That's me as well, except that I was born a bit earlier.
(Don't forget Jimmy Clitheroe, Ted Ray, The Navy Lark, Does the Team Think, etc...some of which can still be found on Radio4extra. :-) )
Although we were not well off, my Dad was a butcher, so we didn't go short of meat. (He didn't abuse the privilege, and brought stuff that would otherwise go to waste, or otherwise cheap cuts). My Mother had learned good household management from her Mother, who kept them going through the depression and WW2 on a very low income when my Granddad was unemployed (he worked in a shipyard, and when one ship was finished, they were out until the next one started).
I don't think we ate unhealthily, except that in the 50s, white sliced bread and other early convenience type foods were just coming in. We didn't eat fancily though, and I still don't. Good quality ingredients cooked very simply.0
