Much of it was. Balls was Chief Advisor to the Treasury in 1997-2005 until he became an MP. He was one of Brown's inner circle, and (to be honest) the 'brains' behind the operation.0 -

By the end of the 1970s, Benn had migrated to the left wing of the Labour Party. He attributed this political shift to his experience as a Cabinet Minister in the 1964–1970 Labour Government. Benn wrote:As a minister, I experienced the power of industrialists and bankers to get their way by use of the crudest form of economic pressure, even blackmail, against a Labour Government. Compared to this, the pressure brought to bear in industrial disputes is minuscule. This power was revealed even more clearly in 1976 when the IMF secured cuts in our public expenditure.
It's that kind of thing that explains why a lot of people in the Labour Party thought that Benn was basically mad. The IMF is an international organisation and has sod all to do with "industrialists and bankers". It's democratically controlled by its members, of whom the UK is one.0 -
Osbourne is just an idiot.
Though might be the right man for the job. As what's required now has more to do with common sense than untested economic theory. There's tough decisions to be made. So a thick skin will be a necessity. Churchill was a great war time leader not so like in peace time.0 -
Can we expect anything other than a mess when the chancellor in charge of all the countries money has not any experience of finances, not even operated a till in the sandwich shop on a Saturday job.
Nobody who has never turned a pound can run anything, they have no understanding of how hard it is to make profit.
Collecting the interest on Daddies investment bonds passed down from the slave trade days does not make you an expert in running a country.Be happy...;)0 -
This is absolutely true, almost entirely so of the Labour party mostly of the Lib Dems and mostly of the conservatives, of course it includes DC & GO.

Yes and of the rest who have run something, you have to struggle to find one that was successful at it.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

And your knowledge or qualifications to make such sweeping comments about an individual you've never had any dealings with ?0 -
What Gordon Brown did manage to do was, keep most people in a job, the safety net underneath those without and the deficit a damn sight smaller than it is now.
What we got now ? sweet FA.Be happy...;)0 -
