If a bonus was to be reliable, then they wouldn't bother giving bonuses, they'd just add it to the salary, hence you should always treat a bonus as if you're going to get ZERO, then be thrilled at anything more than that.

We have an employee bonus here, and you have to work here 2 years before you can receive it. Last year I got 1/3 of the bonus because i'd worked 4 months over the 2 years, so this year i was looking forward to a full bonus of approx £6k! Half way through last year, we got a letter saying due to increased costs blah blah blah, the bonuses would be reduced, so I got only £500! Very disappointing, as my salary is about £4k lower than similar jobs in the area, so the bonus makes it ok...

your OH earns £13k in London>!?!?!?!?! you can earn £17k+ working in a call centre in London!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I hate to say it but unfortunately a bonus is just that - a bonus to get anything on top of the basic they are obliged to pay.

An interviewer will always give an attractive bonus figure to encourage employees to take a job they otherwise may not because of a low salary.

9/10 any bonus stated will be a potential figure, around the most you could expect to earn, but I do agree this should have been made a little clearer at the interview.

Ulimately he has to decide whether he still wants / can afford the job on just the basic salary. It would be a wonderful world if we could all afford to do jobs we loved and not worry about how much they pay, but you may have to gently make him see it's not quite that simple.

Next time - tell him to believe only what he gets in writing!!
