Not on electoral roll - New property purchase - council tax implications???

hi,

I've just completed the purchase of my first house and would like to inform the council that i own the property. However, I'm not on electoral roll (as I've been living on and off with my parents) and would like to know what the implications are for informing the council about my purchase).

My house and my parents house are in differenct local authority controls.

I guess I have to tell my local authority my previous address? Are they likely to inform my parents local authority etc?

Any advice gratefully appreciated.

Thanks.

Doesn't really matter whether you were or weren't previously, surprising that you got a mortgage not being on the electoral role but that is a whole different discussion...

Just go to the local council's website and see whether you can register online....Some are very quick, other can take months before they process the info...

Got a mortgage as I've been with HSBC/First Direct for about 15years and put down a 30% deposit. Is it not best to ring them?

No need to ring them, jsut print off a rolling registration form from their website and post it in. Most councils will update their records within a few weeks.

I can't find it on their website - sent you a PM.

Other question is (if anyone knows the answer): do local authorities talk to one another regarding you previous residence etc. or share your information?

I'm a little uncertain about your concern here.

Registering to vote is quite different from paying council tax.
Even if you are paying council tax this doesn't mean that they will automatically register you to vote.

It is essential that you pay your council tax, otherwise you can be summoned and fined or even (in extreme situations) imprisoned. However, it's likely your solicitor has already informed the council of your purchase.
But contact the council tax department soon otherwise you may have to pay the entire years tax in one go.
If you live on your own make sure you register that fact as you can get a 25% single person discount.

Unless there is something i don't understand you should register for the electoral roll. Its difficult to open bank a/c or get credit if you are not registered.
Your current council won't care whether or not you were previously registered or where you previously lived.

Your previous council won't care whether or not you were registered to vote either. So Unless your parents were for some specific reason claiming single purposes discount for council tax (unlikely presumably) then the fact you lived there too doesn't matter either.

Don't forget to check your council tax banding as you have just purchased the property.
You have 6 months to ask for a review if you think it's wrong compared to neighbours' banding or value of property.

    Go to https://www.voa.gov.uk.

Everyone should check their banding on voa site.
