Noddle Credit Score Gone Down :(

Can anyone advise?
My partners score was 2/5 a year ago, after paying off all credit cards and leaving one loan this went to 4/5.
I've been nagging him to cancel the zero balance cards as i thought they would affect his score, so he did, and today his score is 3/5!
We are hoping to secure mortgage in August and i'm so worried now. Can anyone advise why it has gone down? Was he wrong to cancel those cards, there was about £12 k limits on them all combined.
PS He's never missed one payment in 10 years, the reason he began at 2/5 was because he had 5 cards and two loans! Now he only has 2 loans.
Thanks,

CRA scores mean nothing! If he has no defaults or CCJs and good repayment history then it should be fine.
The score is just aimed at getting people into buying new loans cards or products, don't read too much into it, my dad who is mortgage free and never had a phone contract/loan or CC in his life has a 3/5 and hes been paying Sky TV by direct debit for the best part of 16 years."All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered, the point is to discover them."
