Mortgage for husband only - visa-related

I am soon to be married and we will complete a purchase of a home after the wedding. We are both from abroad; he has indefinite leave to remain (ILR) but I am on a different visa with less than a year left. I will qualify for ILR myself next year. Due to my visa situation, few lenders would offer us a joint mortgage. The two choices we had offered the highest rates despite our very large deposit. With him alone we got a much lower rate. So we decided to just get the mortgage in his name.
I am contributing half of the deposit and will be paying half of the monthly payments.
So I have a few questions:
1) Will I be able to get added to the mortgage once I get my visa next year? Then if so I will also add my name to the deed.
2) Are there any legal protections we can get drafted to make sure that if anything happens to him before I can get added to the mortage/deed, I have rights over the property?
Thanks!

I don't know about question 1 but surely for question 2 being married (you said you are getting the house after the wedding) and your husband having a Will stating all assest go to his wife will be enough to protect you should anything happen to him. In fact it's probably best you both either get a Will or if you have one get your Wills updated now you are getting married.Starting Mortgage Balance: £264,800 (8th Aug 2014)
