Register here for your free wildflower seeds from 15 Marchto sow a mini meadow!
We’ve got lots of exciting plans for National Gardening Week 2013 (15 – 21 April) to help keep Britain beautiful. The National Gardening Week partners, led by the RHS, will be focussing on two main themes for the week; horticultural careers and planting for wildlife.
Going wild for Wildflowers
The RHS and Mr Fothergill’s will be giving away 10,000 packets of annual wildflower seeds for people to sow acres of mini-meadows in plant pots and gardens. The first 10,000 people to register online from 15 March will be sent a packet of seeds including:
Ox-eye daisy (Eucanthemum vulgare)
common foxglove (Digitalis purpurea heptandra)
common mallow (Malva sylvestris)
corn chamomile (Anthemis arvensis)
cornflower (Centaurea cyanus)
common teasel (Dipsacus fullonum)
common poppy (Papaver rhoeas)
common yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
common toadflax (Linaria vulgaris)
ragged robin (Lychnis flos-cuculi)
Jacob’s ladder (Polemonium caeruleum)
We want to help the Nation plant wildflower meadows from mini-meadows in plant pots to transforming spaces in gardens. Sue Biggs, RHS Director General, says: “After enjoying the Olympic Park wildflower meadows in 2012 there is a great appetite from the British public to create their own version at home, which is great news for pollinating insects!”
Over the past 50 years we’ve seen a huge reduction in wildflowers in the countryside, which play a vital part in biodiversity and creating a habitat for pollinating insects. Gardens are increasingly recognised as important sources of nectar and pollen for insects. Encouraging people across the country to plant wildflowers will help protect their habitat.
The RHS has developed extensive advice on what to plant, visit RHS Plants for Pollinators and look out for the Plants for Pollinators logo (below) in garden centres.
