'Windows cannot load your profile'

The PC shutdown normally the other day, when I turned it on the next morning I got this message (can't remember the exact wording)

Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted. Please contact your administrator.

There's a 30 second countdown then another message

Windows cannot find the local profile, you'll be logged on with a temporay profile. Changes to this profile will be lost when you log off.

My documents are still there (spreadheets etc) and so are the downloaded programs. But 'My Favourites' in IE are gone and my photos are too, though when I ran AVG it scanned them so they're hiding. How do I get back into my profile?

Thanks

    I dunno either.
What operating system are you using /service pack ?
Have there been recent changes eg. did you do the recent Microsoft security patch ?
If you had administrative privaledges then you can do and see anything.

what you need to do is open up your main drive, C: etc.

click folders in the bar at the top.

a munu will appear on the left. find documents and settings and click the + sign.

then find your login name and double-click that.

go into local settings and the temporary internet files, then content IE whatever version.

delete all the folders apart from the index file.

reboot and this may do the trick

If your OS is windows XP go to Start -> Run, type in chkdsk in the dialog box and ok. Then reboot.

Thanks, I've just tried that, my user name wasn't there  So I did this

and my user name appeared. Thanks TOG.

I'm still getting the messages, and the favourites still don't show in IE though they're there under my username in C drive. Also I opened OE and it asks me to set up my account, as if I were a new user. I've had it for about 4 years.

Joe_Bloggs, I use XP Pro, I haven't installed anything for weeks.

    Sounds like a corrupt registry.

You could scan your registry with a freeware registry repair application such as this.

Or try a System Restore to a date before you had the problem.

    @ Troo
It was patch Tuesday this week. More like Wednesday in the UK when Microsoft bundle a monthly lot of security patches.
I now find any film DVD left in the PC whist booting is now unable to be played. I have to take the disk out, reboot and then put the disk in.
    (w2k SP4)

I thought new patches may have done something to upset your system. Clearly there has to be an underlying cause. You did not mention your XP service pack level. It could be important or not to someone with more of a clue than myself.

The estimated lifetime of top quality hard drive is 5 years. My disks came with only one a year warranty. This warranty did not protect valuable information anyway. Backup stuff and consider getting a new drive if this type of nonsense continues.

I had service pack 1 a long time ago but it messed up my system so I got rid of it, been too scared to install updates ever since
I thought you'd like to know what I did to fix it (just in case anyone else has the same problem). I used the registry cleaner in TOG's post, it got rid of some of the problems but not all of them. 217 probs, down to 155. Then I used this one, got down to 88 probs. To fix the rest I had to pay and I didn't want to do that so I made a note of them and went to the registry and deleted them individually. The profile was still corrupted so I made a new user account and copied the files over. Then I imported the OE address book following the instuctions here.
It all seems OK at the mo.
Thanks for all your help :T

    @troo

Glad you got it sorted. I personally use Registry Mechanic. Well worth paying for. Got me out of trouble more than a few times. You could also download Microsoft's free RegClean. Good for routine registry maintenance.
