Private landlords are a symptom of a problem and not the cause.

Its ironic that people have flocked back to bricks and mortar after the very crash which was caused by the housing bubble (phoney money). Then again it's little wonder people view houses and other such tangible assets such as gold as a good bet. Or probably more precisely, less worse than others.

That's our situation in a nutshell, I have another fixed rate bond maturing next week, the best 3 years fixed rate savings bond is only paying 3.1% (so less than inflation net of tax), and so there is point in keeping it in cash. If the ftse was around 5,500 I would have put most of it there (especially as my portfolio is light of shares). Even though I don't think around 6,500 is that bad of an investment, I am leaning towards property (although I haven't completely ruled out shares).

My point being there is always a section of society who are never going to be big earners even if they work all the hours under the sun, and believe it not these people do contribute to society often by doing the horrible jobs that the majority of us would not want to do.

So what do you see as the future for these people who are being squeezed more and more who realistically are not going to earn good wages?

You are referring to the section of society who will never be able to own property, certainly under the current circumstances.

What you are looking for is a Utopian world where property is sibstantial and sufficient to meet the ever changing needs of the society.

good luck with getting the government to achieve Utopia.

I never suggested that they will own a property, but the bottom line is they have to live somewhere. So whether this is social housing or private rented the increasing housing costs are a burden one way or another which surely isn't a good thing.

What's your proposed solution to reduce house prices and rents?

Remove all the props for starters. Get rid of tax breaks for BTL's. Build more social housing.
