How to use ready-to-roll without buttercream, or icing sugar...

Hi all! I find myself in somewhat of a quandary...

It is my OH's birthday today, and I am making him a cake :) Simple Victoria sponge covered with ready-to-roll so I can decorate it.

Trouble is, I have no sugar or butter left, and no icing sugar. I'm recovering from injuries at the mo, and I won't be able to make it to the shops. Nor do I have apricot jam which apparently you're meant to use..

So my questions are:

- what can I use in place of icing sugar to help roll out the icing? Flour?

- what can I use in place of butter cream or apricot jam to get the icing to stick? I'm sure last time I used ready to roll (quite a few years ago) I didn't bother using anything to make it stick and no one complained!

xx

Hiya, I would use flour to roll out and whatever jam or marmalade to stick the icing on with.
    Happy Birthday your Oh :)

    Thank you!

I did use flour to roll it out, and it was ok, had to be patched up here and there for small cracks but perfectly acceptable for an amateur!

I used honey to stick it on which works fine.

I will post a pic once it finished, quite pleased with how it is going!

if you have cornflour, then that is perfectly acceptable to roll out icing. just brush as much off the top as you can.
other wise try putting it between two sheets of baking or greaseproof paper. don't worry too much about sticking it to the sponge! its weight should keep it in place.
