That predicted rise in unemployment looks set to begin soon. Reports say that employers have been giving Osborne the benefit of the doubt and holding on to staff in hope of better times and an economic turnaround but are beginning to lose hope in his plan... Manpower now says the opposite of his struggling Plan A is happening - public sector hiring is outstripping the private sector.

The financial sector is FUBAR'd, I can tell you that as someone in the industry.
150,000 jobs have been lost in The City alone with more to go as banks start to wind down their Investment Banking capacity in earnest.
However, as the article you link to states, it isn't all doom and gloom no matter how Priapic our resident Loonie Leftie gets:The jobs outlook is at its strongest since before the recession, with an increasing number of employers planning to recruit staff, according to a new report.
This is PMI data I assume, normally pretty reliable forward looking data. The key question for the British economy is the extent that the USA will drag it forwards vs the Eurozone dragging it backwards. Most of what will happen to the UK's economy is completely out of the politicians' hands despite what both sides tell you.0 -

This is of course true. All employers have a hiring and firing policy which is predicated on some kind of macro view of the short term prospects of the economy and/or George Osborne's popularity rating. They don't create or cut jobs in response to their own profitability and growth.
I can just see it now. Picture the Tescod board meeting as they fervently study this forum, trying to build a picture of the economic outlook and how many people seem to like osborne this month so they know how many jobs to create next month.
Or....do they look at their own management accounts.

I reckon that the new BOE Governor is going to go down like a lead balloon with Labour politicians. Appears very traditional and old fashioned when it comes to sound money management.
No wonder George and Dave was keen to appoint him at any cost. As will be a formidable ally (in a fiscal not political sense).0 -
You can just see DLW dancing a jig whenever any news that can be spun in a slightly negative tone comes out.0

"Public sector rehiring begins after 'over-firing' in redundancy schemes" (the Manpower story)
"UK unemployment falls as private sector jobs hit all-time high"
Both private and public sectors hiring looks like a rise in employees. But employment as a percentage might still increase if the rate of growth of those in the labour market is higher than the rate of growth of jobs.0 -
Too many council jobs went - now they are short of staff0

Mine is due to "get rid" of 25% over the next and that includes all levels, managers down.
It is not left wing controlled, so not a political gesture..
I suspect they will also recruit at the same time for "different" posts at lower pay rates and conditions."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

"Whitehall departments and local authorities hit by years of belt-tightening are re-hiring staff to fill gaps left by over-zealous redundancy schemes, according to a jobs report published on Tuesday. ... Such is the hiring spree that public sector organisations are predicted to outpace the private sector in the next few months. Recruitment firm Manpower said the employers in its survey confirmed that to maintain vital public services they would need to recruit extra staff" from the Manpower story I linked to earlier.Evidence?0
