    Hi Mouse,

I have just spoken to the Co-Op and they are not accepting new accounts for people in my situation. One of the debts is with Barclays, so I cant go with them!!

Have you tried Natwest - my credit rating is shot to pieces, but I was able to get a basic current account - no od with them, done all online,

if not ur other option would be a post office account, that doesn't accept standing orders, but would buy u time for 12 months x

    Thanks Mum2one,

I'm just a bit concerned they will close the account when I go bankrupt.

Barclays was one of mine too, yet they still wrote and offered me a basic account in the same letter advising of default on other account. Don't give up hope.

When enquiring over the phone for a Co-opp account, you have to ensure you are getting information for a Cashminder account.

Whilst BR, only 'basic' bank accounts are allowed [so-called normal accounts have a credit element attached anyway]...

Co-op's policy is to no longer open basic accounts for undischarged BR's.

If you are not yet BR [and don't mention it at the time]....there is no reason why Co-op should not open a Cashminder account or two for you. If the adviser tells you their computer says 'no'....immediately ask them to 'appeal' the decision....and it will likely receive 'manual' approval.

There does seem to be confusion amongst Co-op advisers regarding Co-op's policy towards BR...so this needs to be pushed at the time.

Barclays do apparently not offset any of their bad debts against basic accounts opened by those intending BR....

Only Co-op allow internet access whilst undischarged.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Thank you all so much for your help and advice. I'll take it all on board and keep trying to open an account.
