Evening Invite average gift spend?

I know it's not really meant to be about cost but I have not been to a wedding in years! I think the last time was when my OH was best man.

Anyway we have been invited to the evening reception of a work colleague. Like a lot of couples these days he has stayed with his OH for several years. They have not made out a present list as they don't agree with this.

I have nagged him for ideas and he has suggested dollars as they are touring America on honeymoon. I don't normally like giving money or vouchers but on this occasion I will but what I don't know is how much? How much roughly on average do people spend?

I am far from rich but I am not hard up so please don't suggest what I can afford as I will be no further forward.

Thanks

$45 roughly is £30 personally I would give that amount to a work colleague but you may feel inclined to double it.

'Generally' I do £20 for evening receptions but there have been exceptions, I did £30 for my boss and £30 for a friend of mine.

I normally do more if I go to the day but think £30 between a couple would be my maximum. :)

I'd usually give £30 to £40 depending on how well I know the person. Are there any other colleagues going? Why not club together, then that way if there are more than one couple you can agree on an amount and give them that together?

If its only a work colleague we would probably do about £20.
  • If its a work colleague then is it worth getting others from the office involved. If you do a collection everyone can put in what they feel comfortable with and nobody needs to worry about being stingy or stretching their means to cover it.

my rule of thumb is £50 for a couple on the day and £30 if we are invited as a couple to an evening
£30 if i attend a day on my own and probably still £30 or maybe £25 for an evenin on my own.
    Dollars...looks like more! ;-)

Thank you for the replies. Yes there are other colleagues going but we don't all work together! We move around, so some I will know, others I won't. I am not much into putting together for such an event. Unless I was not invited but we were all clubbing together to give as a 'minding' if that makes sense!

We did this recently and gave $60 between us (about £20 each) I would say anywhere between £15 and £25 each is plenty for an evening do. Dollars is a good idea is it kind of looks like you're giving a bit more ;)
