Powerline kits for under £20.00

I saw this deal for a powerline kit for £19.99 on HUKD thought it may be of interest to the MSE community or anyone having a problem with iplayer and stuff on their Smart TV. People on HUKD recommended it for faster connection so I picked it up on saturday and it worked a treat to connect my Smart TV to the internet, no more buffering on iplayer/youtube:

Just wondered if anyone had found a better price for a similar product?

I have a wired router in one room and a smart tv in the other, will these make me able to connect the tv to the internet without using cables ?

    Thanks to the OP.
I read some of the helpful message on HDUK too, just to confirm that I could "mix & match".
I already invested in a TP link set.

But they were north of £50.

With a bit of luck these will be compatible.

Yes to a degree, but it's not the same as wireless. They use the house electrical mains for transmitting the internet. So a short cable runs from your router to one homeplug plugged into a nearby socket which 'puts' the signal into the mains. A second (or more) homeplug plugs into a socket near the tv or device you need internet on to take the signal out the mains and a short cable then runs from the homeplug into the tv.

I've tried to explain it simply (it is simple) hope it makes sense.

I bought these and got quite excited as I have a Sony TV and thought I would have to buy their expensive dongle to be able to access the Internet on the TV. Managed to get it set up and tried to watch BBC IPlayer but it was ridiculously slow. Kept buffering every couple of seconds. I'm assuming its my very slow download speed but feel I have wasted my money really.

This can't possibly improve your download speeds (the speed that internet data comes into your house) but it can help the speed of your home network (the speed between your router and devices around your house) particularly if there is a big distance between these and if there are thick impenetrable walls for the signal to pass through.
  • Be careful to check your wiring before you buy. I had some of these before (two different sets) to try and run HDTV through the house and it didn't work because the house runs on two ring mains - older houses may still have the same. Modern ones shouldn't but if the ring main is separated the units won't see each other.
