What's the difference between a Draughtsman & an Architect?

Need plans drawn up for a single storey, side extension - utility room & toilet.
What is the difference between these 2 professions? Other than an architect being more expensive?
Thanks

one has spent at least 5 years at university and 24 months in practice, then undertaken a three part exam to allow them to use a protected title - has to pay an annual sum to remain on the register and is required to carry a certain level pi insurance,
the other, well - who knows? could be from any background with any level of training/qualification/experience and may or may not have any insuranceThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
An architect has design responsibility, a draughtsman will draw up what they are told to, that being said you can also get an arhitectural technician who is kind of a inbetween.
I draw up plans for planning and building regs but only what people ask for. If someone wants some advice then I will offer it too but an architect is able to come up with a whole design with minimal information from the client.
HTHSome people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!0 -

That depends if the Draughtsman is just someone who draws in his evening or a registered Architectural Technologist..
The latter is fully insured, trained and registered and more technical than an architect and usually half the price.
Don't forget that most architects hand small work over to their junior draughtsmen as well..0
