Stainless Steel Cutlery Turning Black in Dishwasher

Hi, I wonder if anybody can tell me why this should happen, and how I can stop it happening/restore my cutlery?

There's no other metal in the dishwasher, and not all the cutlery is affected, and neither are stainless steel saucepans/teapot.

place cutlery in a dish with a sheet of tinfoil underneath
pour in boiling water
if cutlery turns silver in 10 mins or under
sorry its not stainless steel..as it has oxidised with the salts in the dishwasher

if you live in a softwater area you just dont need to add salt to your dishwasher in future and you should be able to wash it - just dont use those three in one tablets..

That cutlery cannot be stainless steel or your pans and teapot would be black as well.

It's definitely stainless steel, and some of the cutlery I've had for nearly 40 years, and it's only recently started doing this.

I live in a very hard water area.

I'm thinking it could possibly be the dishwasher tablets I've changed to - the Lidl ones.

Thank you for that link. Some of the newer cutlery is not of such high quality as my 40 year-old set so has possibly been the cause of the problem.

I hope I can get the discolouration off the good stuff then I won't be putting the cheap bits in the dishwasher again!
