Tax back from France

Hi there Guys,

Bit of a tough one this - I worked in France for 5 months and have now come back to the UK. I definatly earnt under my allowance for the Uk but dont know if this applies in France

Is it possible for me to claim tax back ?

How would I go about doing this ?

Are there companies that can do this for me ?

thanks

Ian

....whose tax? the UK's or France's?

The general rule is that no country will repay tax deducted by another country.

So .... our beloved HMRC won't repay to you any tax deducted by the French tax authorities.

I believe "vice versa" as well ... the French authorities won't repay to you any UK tax deducted.

Yes, you can get "credit" for overseas tax paid against tax charged by your country of residence but that's as far as it will go.

if you are due or potentially due a refund of French tax then you need to contact their tax authorities - could you ask someone where you used to work for the relevant tax office (assuming you speak French as you were working there). Or investigate their website. Alternatively ask former colleagues if they know of any reasonably priced French tax agents or maybe an expat website would suggest one?
Beyond that as you were only there 5 months in theory all your income is also liable to UK tax with what is called double taxation relief for any French tax against the corresponding UK tax due on that same income (if there is no UK tax because you were under the allowances and you did not earn or have any other income in that year then too bad no relief). I have also had a very quick look at the UK:France double tax treaty for you and as far as I can see you are still taxable in both countries (sometimes under a double tax treaty you may only be taxable in one country). Hope that is some further help.
