Brighthouse

:o:oembarassed to say that my washing machine blew up this week, and have no spare cash to buy one found myself standing in Brighthouse :eek::eek:

Whilst waiting to talk to salesperson I was listening in to a lady who was buying a washing machine and TV and was signing the hire purchase documents when I heard the words Continuous Payment Authority mentioned:eek::eek::eek: salesperson said they had now brought in this easier method where the lady could register her card with them and it would save her having to call in or ring up to make a payment....omg:eek:lady said ok and signed, I thought omg they never even explained to her what Continuous Payment Authority was and had this nightmare scenario for her where she had no spare money one week and Bhouse came in and took there payment perfectly legitamately but this has all the nightmare scenarios of Payday Loan CPA disasters etc etc.

I walked from the shop and realised a washing machine at there prices was the daftest idea I've had in the last week. I have two hands, hot water, washing powder and a clothes line.

Has anyone who has gotten mixed up with Brighthouse had this friendly offer of Continuous Payment Offer made to them, and I'm just wondering if they are going to make this method of payment a condition of sale to get the goods...doesn't bear thinking about.

I'm finding this debt fighting hard, it's like spending was a drug to me:cool: but I'm starting to see the awful mess I'm in and am reading the forums and taking baby steps to get my life in order and be happier person as well.

I gave myself a :T:T at walking away from the shop, just hope I can keep this up....

Hi NSGW and very well done for walking away.

Having recently had a wm pack up on me I know how it feels to be without one. I bought a recon one for £100 in the end and have started building a wm fund because it won't last forever.

Do you have a savings strategy to be able to get another one? sometimes you can get them cheap in the free ads or free on freecycle as an interim measure.

  • Hi kittiej

I can use my friends washing machine , I look after her little girl on A Thursday morning so can use it then, so not as bad an emergency as I thought it was.

I'm sure it doesn't have to be a new one, reconditioned will do, a local shop has them so it's save save save and will keep an eye out on local Freecycle.

It's just the old me is more persuasive in my head than the new emerging money/debt free person I'm trying to become.

Looks like a DRO is my option now, I can't believe how the old me used to live, my lightbulb moment came when I was watching the TV and they were talking about debt, depression and debt in general, they could have been describing me so that was my turning point, just need to get myself sorted now.

Well done in not using Brighthouse, I feel really sorry for people who think their only option is paying that lot through the nose.

Have you looked at your local Freecycle / Freegle? There are often washing machines offered on my local ones.

I was watching a localish mps youtube videos earlier. She mentioned those hire purchase rip off shops. She said cheapest machines in her local one were £300 but if you paid weekly you would end up paying £500!! Her suggestion was to save with your local credit union - apparently their loan rates are as low as 1%!! Meaning you could then borrow the money for another cheaper washing machine.

In the meantime are you sure your machine is not fixable? Or could you ask a friend if you could do a wash in theirs?
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
  • Yes my friend has said I can use her machine for a few weeks till I can get a recycled or freebie or reconditioned one.

I look after her daughter one full day a week which saves her about£40 in child care fees and I do the odd days extra when the childminder is ill or whatever.

I think if we all exchanged favours it would help us not just financially but would strengthen our relationships with folk.

Local Freecycle has a pine chair on offer so have asked for that am going to try shabby chic and I have put on some household items I don't use anymore so they should hopefully be going over the weekend.

Right had better go do some ironing.

There are sites where you can barter with people, not sure of any addresses though.

why not put the items on ebay since it's free listing this weekend and it's money for a new wm.
