Is Aldi Cheap if you buy alot of smartprice/everyday value/basics range stuff?

If you buy mainly value/basics stuff the I would say stick to the sm. I you want to spend slightly more for better tasting food go down the Aldi/Lidl route. There are some things I wont eat/use value range so the two mentioned above do as good as branded items but considerable less money. Washing up liquid is almost half price for an equivilent brand. I always shop at A/L and top up in sm. I have no 'must have' value brands but there are things that I will only have for A/L.0

A bit embarrassed to say I actually conducted a comparison today - splashed out on Cirio (2 for £1 in Sainsburys) which I used to buy on offer before I found Aldi's 33(?)p Sweet Harvest ones. Results:
Toms appearance - Cirio wins, a few bits of skin attached to the stalk end on Aldi. Cirio toms a little larger
Juice appearance - Cirio slightly darker red, but both very thick. Winner - Aldi as the Cirio looked a bit unnatural, probably being unfair to it
Flavour - quite different. Cirio sweeter. Would prefer it if drinking as a tomato juice (which I don't). Aldi's would be better in a Bloody Mary I think. For cooking, no difference.
Overall - v little difference so Aldi wins hands down on price.
Hey, rock'n'roll on a Sunday night or what :rotfl:
I often add a tsp of sugar/sweetener to value tinned tomatoes for that very reason.0 -
I think from experience the main reason places like Aldi and Lidl end up cheaper is because as a previous poster has said... there is A LOT less choice, and that makes it easier to identify the cheap items and reduces confusion.
Try finding the cheapest packet of 4 beans in an average supermarket, and with all the special offers on etc you can spend 10 mins figuring out which works out best!
We all fall victim to the additional extras and offers as well, shops are designed that way, especially in the big supermarkets- although I often find those central aisles in Lidl and Aldi are a nasty source of spending my money.
"Oh.. look... a set of screwdrivers... I'm sure they'd be handy!"
:rotfl:
We personally buy certain things from certain shops to help beat the prices. We buy our crisps from Lidl... 48 bags of crisps for £4.00. That's £0.08 a packet, and they are tasty too. That lasts us on average a month if you said 2 of us are both taking a packet to work every working day.
We find fabric softener from Aldi/Lidl is very good value for money as well and is pretty good. No point coughing up twice as much for some funky fragrance in my opinion.MFW 2010- £112,500 + 20% Equity Loan = £150,000 35 years
2013- £108,877.28 + 20% / current OP = 19 years :T

For me its a quality thing eg. Aldi's tinned tomatos may be a couple of pence more than Asda/tesco, but there is no comparison. Aldi's are tasty and thick. T & A value stuff are watery and bitter. I think sometimes people move to the value stuff for price and put up with how bad the products are as you get used to it. For me I prefer better tasting, better quality products.
Look at Aldi's washing up liquid-as good and better than fairy liquid, so lasts ages for under 80p a bottle. Swapping to value from that would be false economy as you would use alot more.
Then again I no longer get meat from ANY of the stores.
We have a wonderful local meat farm shop, with free range, high welfare, locally produced meat that is the same price or cheaper than the big stores and once you taste the better quality you realise just how much the big stores are shafting us both on price and quality.
I still reckon though if you swapped a whole shop to Aldi, you would save overall and most surveys back this up, there is a reason they got all those which awards lol.
I find very little I can't get from Aldi or Lidland their ranges keep being expanded. At lidl last week I noticed they have a range of "health foods" so seeds/dried fruit etc, all alot cheaper than Mr T et al.
I am just having a brew with a Lidl "sonday" biscuit which IS a choco leibinz-side by side they are identical and blind taste the same, plus they are both made in the same town of Neckarsulm (where balsen have a massive factory lol). Aldi have cake slices from the same factory as Mr Kipling and as I understand it the beans are now HP beans.
So basically top quality ie, branded/finest etc for around the price of value, plus special offers, and I find less and less I need from the big stores anymore.
I would say give it a go one week and see.

Aldi do 380g carton boxes of the best chopped toms I ever encountered, 39p a pop compare to the 400g value range in Mr T at 35p, no comparison wasover!:T
Avoid the value frozen chicken breasts as it is way too salty, they do smaller packs of 5 breasts without water injected for 3.99 which is lush.Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

Thanks for the tip.
I like Smartprice curry sauce it's like chip shop curry sauce but I will try the "chosen by you" range next time I shop there.
I find the Smartprice sweet and sour sauce way too watery, but then it's cheap they have to cut corners somewhere..0 -
Aldi do a lovely 'Prin**e type cracker - almost same type tube. They taste the same and they're 89p instead of £1.50 or more. The tube is slightly less weight but a LOT less price - DH hasn't realised yet........;)
Lidl muesli in the blue packet is fantastic - PLENTY of lovely almonds, hazlenuts, pecans, walnuts & fruits & seeds (sorry can't remember price tho)
Like a lot of other posters I shop for certain things at Aldi & Lidl 'cos the quality is so good & use the SM for the restSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -

They are called stackers and my kids reckon they are as good as the Pring ones, same sort of flavours as well. The cream cheese and chive always goes down well here lol.

Can I ask what part of the country you are from?
I'd love to find somewhere like that0
