Energy import benefits of UK Solar PV

Hi
On the contrary, what I have posted is entirely in accordance with your post of 22:34 yesterday and was meant to support it ..... perhaps it's just an example of where simple prejudgement should be displaced by a level of absorption, reasoning & understanding.

I reckon you two were separated at birth. You almost always come to the same conclusion, but from the tiniest of different angles.;)
Or maybe it's just the's, which I can never seem to pull off!
Mart (silly mood again).Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

Also, it doesn't really matter whether you're going uphill, downhill or on the level - if you are calling for a lower level of acceleration than you are getting, you're likely going to be using regenerative braking. If you're on a slight decline and you want to accelerate, then you're likely to use positive power.
How are you finding it? Have you tried the heater yet?. if so, does it affect the state of charge much?
I know that there's an energy requirement when switched on, the post in question was really a tongue-in-cheek reply to support a position taken by another member. What the 'baseload' power consumption is, I have no idea and I'm not likely to put a meter on it to find out, but 250W does seem to be a little high if the aircon, blower etc is off ....
As for the car itself, I thought that there'd be a pretty steep learning curve for MrsZ, and I was right ... she's not really that minded towards new technology therefore it was up to yours truely to read the billion (almost!) pages in the user manuals and provide guidance. Heater doesn't seem to make any difference, however, clearing the windows with the heater+aircon over the last few damp days certainly does if she's turned the eco-mode off with her handbag !! ........( which she denies
). We spent over 1 hour in stop/go traffic yesterday which was quite surreal as all you could hear was other cars and birdsong. It'll probably take 3 months or so to learn how to drive without the 'lead wellies' she needed for the last car, but I reckon that she'll be converted eventually ... almost 2 weeks of mainly urban journeys and she's used about a quarter of a tank of petrol, the last car would be close to empty by now and it had double the tank capacity !!, which in terms of this thread, all helps with the balance of trade .... The only (minor) complaint to date is the infernal internal reversing 'beep', that will definately get 'fixed' if we don't get used to it soon .....

It must be a humour thing, ie. not understanding it over the internet. Perhaps I should use more

Go on, you can thank him, 'zeuph' won't mind!0 -

The reason for this is simple - they are designed to generate the electricity as efficiently as possible, not to be as efficient as possible in standby. Think of it as a car. A car is most fuel efficient at a predetermined speed and gear not when it is sitting still idling. It will use slightly less fuel sitting still but you still get most of the emissions and costs with none of the benefits.
.
You need to understand the difference between efficiency and consumption.
Renewables reduces the consumption of fossil fuels.
A car stationary at idle has very low efficiency (0%) but also very low fuel consumption.
A car at 50mph in top car will have maximum efficiency (maybe 35%) but also high fuel consumption.
A car at top speed will have low efficiency and maximum fuel consumption.
If I asked you pay for the fuel for a car, which one would you want to pay for. The one sitting at idle or the one being driven at 50mph?
Even though the car at 50mph is more efficient, its also costing more to run.0 -

UK Gas production
Probably a better source to reference regarding gas supply security is the following report .... http://www.ofgem.gov.uk/Markets/WhlMkts/monitoring-energy-security/gas-security-of-supply-report/Documents1/Gas%20SoS%20Report.pdf ..... however, although there's mention of shale gas it makes absolutely no attempt to quantify what any potential impact this could have. I actually find this quite disconcerting - why would the government commission a report regarding energy security and not require that consideration be made to shale gas reserves and their effect on the subject at hand .... possibly yet another waste of money then, and the authors are eagerly awaiting the purchase order for a similar report to include the obvious !!
The above referenced graphic displays a peak production of <7bcm(billion cubic metres)/year ~10 years ago, whereas latest estimates for Lancashire shale alone run to around 3x this (20bcm/year) if necessary ( http://www.naturalgaseurope.com/impacts-of-shale-gas-on-energy-prices ) ... which certainly puts things into context for the long term and explains why the nuclear industry have either pulled out of the UK, or want production subsidies for guaranteed income ....

National Grid denies it's time to panic amid claims UK could use up natural gas stores within days
LAST UPDATED AT 11:55 ON Wed 6 Mar 2013
IT ISN'T TIME to panic quite yet. The National Grid has denied that Britain could run out of natural gas, despite prices spiking at their highest since 2006 this week. Gas prices rose to more than 115p per thermal unit yesterday, after problems at a processing plant in Norway squeezed supplies, an increase that is likely to be passed onto consumers.0
