Is self employed self assessment on behalf of an organisation ?

in Cutting tax
Daughter (student aged 19 away at uni) has (she thought) registered as self employed on HMRC website as she coaches sport part time (earned £100 over past 2 months so estimated £500-£1,000 p.a.) she sends bills for the coaching and gets paid into her bank a/c)
She's just got a letter from HMRC addressed to her and headed self assessment activation code. It starts "Dear <daughter's name>, <daughter's name> has enrolled to use the self assessment service on behalf of your organisation. ... If <daughter's name is authorised to use this service, please ensure they receive this letter asasp etc."
But there is no "organisation", just daughter working an hour or so for herself some weeks. Does the letter look right to you tax experts ? Is that what HMRC send when you register as self employed ? Or does it look as if she registered for the wrong thing on HMRC website ? (she did say their website really confused her)
Thanks for any thoughts

I don't know the answer to your question, but if there is a phone number on the letter I would suggest your daughter calls them to get it sorted out - it may just be a standard letter, or as you say she may have registered incorrectly. Despite the anti-HMRC views of a lot of people I've often (although not always, so persistence may be required) found that individuals try their best to be helpful.0

OP , Im sorry but I dont know the answer to your question either but just wanted to say that my Daughter (also 19 years old) used the HMRC site to register as self employed as she has started selling avon products.
At the same time she was automatically registered for a government gateway account and when we now log into the gateway account the account is showing that she is an organisation - as opposed to an "individual".
My Daughter called the HMRC newly self employed helpline and they told her that they are unable to check whether my Daughter registered correctly and that she would have to wait for her "welcome pack" being sent out to her at home and then she could call to have the details amended if they were incorrect.
Has your Daughter received the welcome pack yet?
Your Daughter is right when she says that the HMRC is a bit confusing . My Daughter said the same lol.The loopy one has gone :j0 -
Sounds like she has registered as an agent on behalf of herself. She has received an activation code which she must pass to her agent? I would give them a call asap.0

Thanks all. Yes I will suggest she rings them - although I know she is reluctant to do so as it's all so strange to her so she'd rather have it from them in writing ! and no no-oneknowsme she hasn't had her welcome pack yet. As you say maybe that will make it clear.
She has though now sent me a HMRC print screen from when she registered and that says "you have requested to register as self-employed/sole trader for self assessment and class 2 NICS" so hopefully she's not too far out, as you say nomummofun she may have registered as an agent on behalf of herself ...
On the plus side she's received a small earnings exemption certificate so she did that NI bit right !!0 -
Hello, Fluffig I have just received exactly the same letter and wondered if you could let me know what the outcome was of your daughters dilemma?
many thanks0
