Tax refund for Training

Hi,
My wife is going to be unemployed at the end of the month, she is getting a reasioanble amount of redundancy, she was looking at doing some on line training, I think it's @£1,500, can she get Tax back on that?

Thanks

Steve

  • When is she likely to pay for the training, after 6:4:2013?

I think that she has already paid for it 0% finance, does it matter if it's this tax year or next?

She has some exams to pay extra for, that will be after April.

    Thanks for the reply...

Also as she is unemployed that that may throw a spanner in the works because it can not be 'wholly and exclusively' for her job.

http://www.taxinsider.co.uk/186-Learning_the_ropes_tax_relief_for_expenditure_on_training_courses.html gives a bit of insight but of course it is geared around somebody who is working.

Well if it was paid in the next tax year what tax would she have paid in that year to claim back?
A bigger problem though is that you cant get tax relief on this type of training costs. this is made clear in hmrc guidance

Only if the training is required to maintain her current role and job - for example a lot of professionals have to do a certain amount of CPD (continuing professional development) courses each year. But training that towards improving your qualifications or training for a new career, doesn't count.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

Thanks everyone, loks like she's going to be out of luck, don't make it easy do they

She has signed up and paid for the course, but she want s learn something different, she hopes to earn more money and have more of a chance to get another job,so, you pay for a training cores £1,200 and Exams £300, you don't get any Tax releif \ bemefit. You then get a new job earning a nice salary and get Tax accordingly on that salary

  • Shame whe has already paid for it as she was made redundant, she would qualify for ESF (European Social Fund) Skills Support for Redundancy (SSR) funding (usually) through your local FE College. Depends on what she wants to study it might be worth getting in touch with them still to see what she can get for free.
