I use the Strava app for my bike rides. You can change it to walk/run etc and there are privacy settings too.

i have downloaded mapmyrun.com & mapmywalk.com onto my iphone but you can use it without the phone and just manually enter the details.

its pretty accurate almost all of the time. have had the odd anomaly like last week when i walked my usual route and it said i done 7 miles when i had done 4.

Think I would get in trouble as a lot of where I go are footpaths with no road to drive next to.
