The company I work for gives you extra 5 days holiday and a gift upto value of £500 after 25 years service.I hate migraines.0

I prefer staff bonuses to reflect the contribution that has been made towards profit.
Where's the incentive for really good staff if others get the same bonus just for being there?
I understand where you are coming from, but JL staff know the model when they accept a job there and the customer service experience I have had there is almost invariably better than at other retailers. They must be doing something right to achieve that - certainly better than the experience you get when you go into a bank where everyone is incentivised to sell you things you don't want (I.e. paid according to the absolute profit they generate)...0 -

That reminds me of the old joke about why being a department store Santa is a great job. You get a free uniform and 48 weeks unpaid holiday a year!
I'm hoping to be with my current employers long enough to get Long Service leave and then work for myself or retire.0 -
We don't get it that great here do we looking at these stories of what others get.
I suppose putting it into the perspective of looking at sweat shops etc we are very well looked after. However, there is always room to improve. Hopefully more and more take the approach of JL as life get's tougher for the capitalism method.0 -

John Lewis have announce a 17% bonus will be given to all staff this year as they report higher profits.
This is what I like about this company, it's (reported as) a 17% rise for everyone, regardless of their status, position etc. Just a straight 17% of salary. Everyone get's the same.
Is John Lewis the model others should be following? They just don't appear to be greedy. They provide what I'm led to believe is good quality goods, with good quality service ans seemingly they look after their staff too.
Is this model the one others should be following? You wouldn't see Tesco's doing this for example, it would all be weighted at the top while squeezing the bottom for everything it's worth.

From what I've been told by people 'in the know' JLP only pay good bonuses because the basic pay isn't very good. Many limited companies pay bonuses as well, though seldom as generous as JLP, then again if your basic is good who cares? No large business is a democracy - the bosses always lay down the law and the employee has to obey, or leave. The real benefit of working at JLP is the final salary pension, for which you qualify after serving for three years.0 -

If you buy online from John Lewis you get a usable website, clear processes, good delivery from a reliable courier, no mucking about if things go wrong, clear checking or resolution procedures - and quite keen prices if you check carefully first.
It's a model that muppets like Homebase and their muppets Yodal should die for. Next too (terrible website and no prospect to cancel orders on their over-keen system).Under no circumstances may any part of my postings be used, quoted, repeated, transferred or published by any third party in ANY medium outside of this website without express written permission.
