Remortgage with joint ownership, one abroad

I own a buy-to-let property 50:50 with a friend who now lives abroad. We are currently on a high rate with our existing lender and trying to remortgage elsewhere, but I am unable to find a mortgage provider willing to lend to us. They either provide uk resident mortgages or ex-pat mortgages - nothing in between.
Does anybody know of any mortgage providers who are willing to be flexible?
Any other ideas, such as having a UK guarantor for the ex-pat or using a limited company (I think the latter is not cost effective)?

Does your existing lender have any customer retention products you could consider as an alternative to remortgaging?I am a mortgage broker. Yes, but the rates on their retention mortgages are no better than what we are currently paying. The logical reaction to this would be to move providers, but given the below mentioned problem this doesn't appear to be possible. It feels like we are tied into an uncompetitive rate with no options.0

Yes. I could see no easy solution to the problem of a remortgage, so I hoped the retention product idea might provide you with a useful alternative.
