Dispute with landlord

Hi,
I'm not sure if I've posted this thread in the right section but its the most relevant I could find.
I rent a room from an agency but do have a landlord(owner of the property) who is pretty hands on and pops over now and again. Unfortunately during a gathering I had with a lot of friends someone damaged my bedroom door without my knowing and I haven't found out who it was. I've come to terms that Ill have to fork out for the damage. Luckily one of my best friends is a carpenter and could fit a new door free of charge no problem, and has got me a quote for the new door. Unfortunately my land lord came over the other day and saw the damaged door whilst paying a visit to see another tenant in the house. I told him about the replacement I had arranged but he was having none of it. He said he would only use people who he trusts and no "cowboy" friend of mine. He got a price for the job and it is so much more than if i got my friend to do it for me. Also, the price of the door he is buying is more expensive than the one my carpenter found although its the same one, just different supplier. This money is going to be coming out of my deposit ive been told. It doesnt seem fair to me as Ive found a cheaper alternative myself. Do I have any cause to complain? I respect that its his property but that dosnt mean I have to pay for the most expensive options does it? Your thoughts would be appreciated

Also would it be worth while talking to the hosuing agnency as they are in charge of the tendancy really?0

really the landlord is within his rights to use his own tradesman...0
-
Of Course he is, but am I expected to pay the more expensive price. I feel like Im getting bullied into paying the highest price0

If the LL own tradesman costs that much, you will have to pay that much as that is LL decision. The only advice would be to find the culprit and give him\her the bill, if you don't know which of your friends is responsible, the bill will lie entirely on your lap I'm afraid.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Well it sounds like Im not onto a winner here. It seems very unlikely that Ill find the culprit. I can understand that he wants to use the trades man he wants, but the replacement door he is buying is even more expensive. I find it astonishing he can do this. Is there anyone I can legal argue this with, If say get both invoices as a comparison.0

Well, he's not entitled to betterment - fitting a better door than was on there previously. However, look at it from his point - how does he know the quality of the door your friend will fit, or their competence to do the job properly? - can you furnish him with any imformation in relation to either of these which might help persuade him?
Hope it was a good party

Personally I don't think you've got a leg to stand on. your guest = your damage, just suck it up and pay.:heartsmil

Hi
You have no choice but to let his tradesperson do the work and I do not blame him.
However, write |(letter thingie with a stamp on it) advising him that you have seen the same door as the one already there at a cost of (much kless than he is being charged). You could send him a copy by e-mail as well, with the link.
Ask if you can buy the door and his person fit it?
You would then stand in a pretty good situation to challenge him when he tries to claim bakc the cost of the new door. It may well be agreed that he is only entitled to the value of the cheaper door.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
I wouldn't blame the tradesman hes just doing his job I understand that. I have now emailed the landlord the door I have found. Its Identical(no better, no worse) but the price is lower. I hope this will count for some sort of record. I have suggested this to him before but his attitude kind of stinks at the moment. Just says "no, i have it all arranged now" even though I know his trademan havent purchased the door yet. Im not trying to fob him off with a shoddy trademan, my friends is fully qualified, studied in college and did an eprentaship, has been running his own business for atleast 5 years now.0
