Speculative letter

Hi all,

I am thinking of sending a speculative letter to a large employer in my field. Normally this wouldn't be an issue for me but I have recently applied for a role there via an agency (via an online job board). The recruitment for that role is apparently now on hold but I would like to send a letter and CV in separately in case there are any other jobs coming up.

Obviously though I don't want to be seen as either trying to bypass the existing application or annoying the HR dept with multiple contacts which would be counterproductive.

Any thoughts on how I should approach this, or should I just send it in?

Thanks.

  • Dear name/sir/madam

I recently applied for x position which I believe is now on hold; however I am keen to be considered for any positions that your company might have available. I am experienced/qualified in x and y [make it relevant to the firm] and enclose a copy of my CV for your perusal. I am interested in positions pertaining to this and that; and have a particular expertise in z and would love to be able to explore available opportunities within your organisation.

    Yours Sincerely/Faithfully

The job I am currently in I actually applied through via one agancy, and in the midst of them taking their sweet time in doing anything about my application, a second agency then contacted me and asked if I'd mind if they put me forward for a job they had available (I had no idea at the time that it was the same position). I said yes, had 2 interviews, and got the job. Then the first agency called about 2 weeks after starting and said "we have put you forward now and the company advised that you already have the job!". I couldn't believe it and it served them right for taking so long about it. They lost their fees that they would have earned and also had their reputation dented for future recruitment for my company (they are quite a big agnecy). Needless to say, I would go for it. Doesn't matter the size of the company, you may save them a recruitment fee!

Thank you both for your replies.

Yeah I did have a second agency contact me about the same role also but I let slip I had already applied and so they said thanks and they'd keep my details etc. I will send the letter and CV in and see what comes of it!
