Is sugar really necessary in a tomato based sauce?

I've never added sugar and maybe that's why sometimes my tomato based sauces are a bit bitter. Will try adding a tiny bit in future.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

I add a bit of milk instead of sugar to counter the acidic taste - apparently it's quite a common additive in Italy. Try it and see if it works for you!
Just wanted to say that my mum (who is Italian) always adds milk to her tomato sauces shhhhhh! don't tell anyone as this is top secret :rotfl: BTW it really works.0
