default question

Hi,

ive just got my credit report from callcredit and have noticed that i have a default from 3rd July 2001 from abbey for 252. I usually got my credit reports from experien but they never picked this up before!

It is still in default and i obviously need to clear this up. as soon as i do, when will it disappear from my file?

ANOTHER 6 years?

thanks

A default lasts 6 years, so if you got it in July 2001 it should come off July this year, but you're best contacting abbey once the 6 years has elapsed I'd have thought, as they may not have this as high in their priorities as it is in yours!

It would be worth your while reading through this factsheet:

However, the bit most relevant to you is:
CAN I ASK FOR INFORMATION TO BE REMOVED FROM MY REPORT?

The credit reference agency will leave the information on your report for at least six years. Information held by agencies include the following:

    Credit accounts 'in default'

    * These details are deleted after six years from the date of the default.

    Settled accounts

    * These are deleted six years from the date the account is settled or when the last payment is made unless a 'default' was registered.

    REMEMBER
This should mean that even if you settle a debt nearly six years after a default, the debt will be removed from your file six years from the date you defaulted.

In other words, the default will only drop off in July 2007 if the default has been marked as settled/satisfied.

    Hope this helps.

The last time I had a credit report there were items on it belonging to someone else with the same name as me. Could that have happened to you?

If you think so, you can get it removed, just contact whoever produced the report and explain :)

I think you'll find that the default will be removed 6 years after the date of default regardless of whether it's been satisfied or not.
