we will be moving into a property that has a front garden that according to the neighbours is like a swamp when it rains , can anyone suggest what plants/shrubs i can plant to try to reduce this problem.

Google something like 'fishbone land drain' as it's probably the best solution .... I doubt that there's any plant which would react fast enough to make a difference in heavy rain, but if the problem's a high water-table and there's enough room in the front garden for something like a willow tree then that might help (but it would need to be a decent distance from the house) ...

willow and alder like damp ground. tbh, if this damp ground is near your foundations i would be getting drainage in. water weakens soils like you wouldn't believe0
