What ID do you need to get a mortgage? One advisor has told us that without photo ID we will find it very hard. I don't have a passport or full driving licence - should I apply for a passport just to have the ID or will something else be accepted?

Plenty of items on most lenders' ID/PoA lists.
You do not need photographic identification.
If you have no passport or driving licence, most lenders will take extra items from the PoA list instead.
For example, with no passport or driving licence, I'd expect to obtain any four or five of;-
recent* bank statement
recent council tax bill
recent utility bill
recent DWP benefits letter
HMRC tax code notice
birth certificate
national insurance card
national health service card
shotgun/firearms certificate
disabled driver's blue badge
mortgage statement
tenancy agreement/rent book.
*Issued in the last three months.
Our responsibility is to ensure we can create an audit trail for the authorities to follow in the event of suspicion. It is not to force people to obtain unnecessary photographic documentation.I am a mortgage broker. Confusion here between proof of identity and proof of address. Proof of identity is almost universally passport or driving licence (new type with card and photo), although other items, such as gun licence, maybe accepted by some lenders.
If thinking about a mortgage I would recommend applying for a passport, as many lenders will not accept a provisional driving licence.0 -
