in Cutting tax
Hi all
Got my new coding notice this week, and I'm being charged quite a bit for a previous underpayment. Spoke to HMRC and they think that I got fuel for my Company Car for the tax year 2009/10. I've checked my copy of the P11D for that year and no fuel is included, my Payroll dept have also checked their copy and it says the same, however HMRC are insistent their copy lists fuel as a benefit.
HMRC tell me to get my Payroll dept to submit a revised P11D, Payroll tell me what they sent to HMRC is correct and have nothing to revise so can't submit anything.
Any ideas where I go next?

Yes. You send HMRC a copy in the post and say "This is the correct P11d, please amend your records to reflect this." Should they decline this generous invitation, you then ask HMRC to provide the evidence in paper - as you have to them - of their version of the World.
Should they carry on declining, you carry on through all the various HMRC layers until someone with a brain looks at your file and surrenders.Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0 -
You will see lots of cases like this on this site, where HMRC point the finger at a payroll department. In my opinion in 90% of these cases or so the fault lies with HMRC and the finger pointing is the knee-jerk response, hoping the victim - you in this case - just goes away. Don't go away.Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0
