Thanks.. she's lived in the same property for the last 30 years and that's her main/sole residence which she'll return to. On the other hand it's true, 9 months is not negligible... although it could be argued it's actually three periods of three months each, as she'll be spending 2 weeks at Xmas and 2 weeks at Easter at home. Her home that is.

It will be interesting to say what the council says... until now I wasn't concerned with this at all, as her visits never lasted more than 2-3 weeks.

My son is in the British Army based in Belfast and pays a weekly sum towards council tax. When I asked my local authority about him coming home every weekend, they said as he was paying elsewhere, he didn't have to pay again.

You will have to ask locally.

The armed forces are a special case. That's not how it works for others.

My neighbour was in the Middle East for 2 years, came back for a long weekend every other month and his wife still had to pay full council tax.
