NI contributions for previous company

Hi i need some help if possible please...
Basically, i work for a company who previously never paid tax or NI to previous employees (2-3) (I never knew about this until Friday) ((before i worked for the company)) the company which never paid NI or TAX has now ceased trading, and trading under a new company name in a different type of business.
Basically on Friday we had a call from one of said employees wife Friday morning, it turns out the employee is in hospital after stroke of some sort (do not know all details) and is currently unable to use one side of his body and talk.
Basically she (wife) has called because they have tried to claim for some sort of benefit but because he did not contribute to NI for a period of time he is not eligible? We would obviously like to put this right, and either pay HMRC the correct amount from when he worked, or pay him the equivalent of what his benefit will be?
How can i find out what he is entitled to? He will be out of work for a least a year, if not longer, and will probably never gain all feeling into the effected area, so may be on long term benefit or may be never to work again? The person is under state pension age.
Any help would be greatly appreciated? As i have been asked to deal with this and i have no idea...
