Tax questions

Options
I have discovered I owe the tax man a bit of money for a pension I have wrongly claimed tax relief on. But Have been looking on the inland revenue site and there may be some other things I cam claim on to off set some of what I own.

For instance I work from home all the time. I have been paid £15 a month by my employer on my expenses for the last 3 or so years. I,have to provide my own broadband for this on top of the extra heating and electric etc. i notice from the inland revenue site I could possibly claim £18 a month. Is this worth the effort? I guess this is £18 less the £15 paid by my employer.

Mileage allowance in my private car is next. I am now paid by my employer at the Inland Revenue rate but was paid £0.10 less per mile before the latest increase. Does this mean I can claim £0.10 per mile back from the Inland Revenue for when my employer paid less than their rates?

I think my tax may become a bit of a nightmare...

Essentially yes - look at the "Tax relief for business mileage in your own vehicle" section on this site: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/relief-mileage.htm. HMRC are surprisingly helpful over the phone with this stuff.

Good effort in making sure you are claiming all the expenses you are entitled to. Worth perusing this forum to find other nuggets (e.g. do you wash your uniform at home, if you have one?)

No - what you can claim is the TAX on the £0.10, not the amount itself.

Same thing for your working at home.

You may well have already seen this but, almost certainly, your broadband won’t count.

You can claim tax relief on the £3 pw difference between the HMRC rate and your employer’s rate.

If you are a basic rate taxpayer that will be 60 pence per week in your pocket for working from home and 2 pence per mile for the motoring.
