Employment and sickness

Hi all,
Wanted some advice on my current situation. Been with my current company for 3.5 years, no sickness up until this point.
A year ago I went in for a routine knee op, a meniscus repair and cruciate tidy up.
It went well, but he knee swelling never abated, so went for another op. This hasn't gone so well either. Work is ok about the time off (getting on for 12 months) .Just returned to the surgeon who gave me a steroid injection there and then. He said 'give it 6 weeks and we will see' .I know this hasn't worked as I can still feel my knee crunching as I bend it.
So I'm looking at another 6 week period to be told 'more surgery' and 3 months + again for physio and recovery (leg now atrophied de to lack of use)
Im getting royally peed of with this. Along with the fact the longer I have off, the less sure I feel about returning to work. I want to go back, but Im sure after having so long off, it wont go down so well.
What can I do to ensure I keep my job? as the NHS seem to think months off at a time isn't a problem.

How mcuh time have you had off?
How you you keep your job? Well have work said they will get rid of you if you are off? Do you get paid sick leave? We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I know jobs where you would have been sacked in a month so I guess from where I am coming from you are lucky to still have a job. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Yes ,lucky, but the NHS isnt helping matters. Ive never heard of this before, so did a google, no joy. So had to post on here.
Im lost as to what to do to right things. The whole situation seems so way out of my control.
As Ive said, my biggest worry is returning to work, it doesnt look good for me having so long off, Im worried it might just be a couple of months then go rid of due to on going knee complaint, which isnt being rectified0
